Blogging Project Post #2

The story of Antigone and her relatives is a pretty wild one. Their antics, however, are not too far removed from what we watch every day on television and in film. Can you think of some modern equivalents of the play Antigone, updated versions though they may be? I know, to me, it seems an awful lot like an episode of "The Jerry Springer Show," but what other shows and films are similar?

A modern movie such as Gladiator is not that far removed from the story of Antigone. It displays similar antics since it takes place almost in the same time period. It always displays the selfishness and the determination of a king who compares himself to a god. It also contains a person much like Antigone who wants nothing more than for justice to prevail.

A modern film that I think is alot like Antigone is V for Vendetta. The story takes place in the future England where war and disease has torn through the world. In a time of peril a crazed leader steps up and leads the nation. After seeing the error of his ways in treating his people, “V” the terrorist tries to persuade the people that this man is cruel and should be taken out of power. The desperate chancellor tries hard throughout the whole movie trying to capture this terrorist but fails. “V” succeeds in getting the people to stand up to the high chancellor when it comes to November 5th. The movie concludes with the Parliament building being blown up signifying that the people shouldn’t fear the government, the government should be afraid of its people.

A movie that i would compare with the story of Antigone is a show called i love money on Vh1. This show is similar because the people on this show is persuading everybody and lieing to them so they can get closer to the money. The people in this show uses pathos, logos, ethos to persuade the other people into believing them. Both of the people in these stories and shows decieve their enemies to get what they want.

I think that Antigone is in a way similar to The Dark Knight. These two story/film are similar because like Creon he goes from good leader to bad one, Harvey Dent goes from good leader to bad one. Also, i think that these two parallel because like Ismene tries to take partial blame for burying Polynices, Batman took responsibility for the people that Harvey Dent killed.

I beilive a movie that is close is. "The family that preys". In this movie there is a family that seperates because the wife wants another husband. As the movie goes on the husband realizes that he is being cheated on. He always had a dream of starting his on company and after the break-up he does. As soon as this happens the womans lover goes back to his real wife leaving her alone with nothing.

A modern movies such as Taylor perry movies could be related to the play Antigone because they have a lot of drama. In the movies he makes people cheat on there wife's with their own family and then the entire family would be messed up for life. or he will write about a time when that wife was getting beat by her husband.

The story Antigone is similar to Romeo and Juliet. Both movies are tragedies with families involved. Antigone and Haemon fall in love as Romeo and Juliet. They are all doomed to die. Both stories show young people would sacrifice their love and die if they can not have each other.

The story antigone reminds me mostly of The Mauria Show. When ever i am flipping through and see it on they seem to always be doing paternity tests. You always have three guys there and one turns out to be here cousin and no one knows who the dad is. This is similar to oedipus and him sleeping with his mother. It is just all the weird sexual things happening.

A modern adaptation of Antigone I think relates to Meet the Parents. Yes, the movie has a happy ending, but the whole time two guys are fighting over what they feel is best for a woman he is pursuing. Which constantly results in them bumping heads.

I think the play Antigone could be an espisode of Dr. Phill. The family drama and argueing that went on is simmilar to some of the issues Dr. Phill has to deal with. He would have tried to help Antigone and Creon work out their issues, and if that didn't work he would have Haemon come on and talk about what he thought. Being both Creon's son and Antigone's fiance he would have been a key player in Dr.Phill's strategy to working things out. This seems like a weird parallel but if you think about it and play it out in your head it becomes clear that the play would make a great episode of Dr. Phill.

I think that a modern day equivalent to the play Antigone is the spanish soap operas my mom watches. I know they have a lot of drama because whenever I go see it there are people crying. And I can only think that the people have affairs with each other and all kind of drama appears.

I think Antigone can relate to Panic Room. The woman is always trying to do the right thing in the movie. She tries to take care of her daughter. The only good relationship wouldhave to be that both Antigone and Foster both were trapped in a room or cave. Foster lives, but Antigone dies.

I think the story of Antigone could be related to the show "House." I chose house because Dr. House would resemble Creon because he abuses his powers as the best doctor in the hospital for personal gain. Also, Cutty has risked her job multiple times trying to do the right thing, such as put House back into his place. It's like the eternal conflict of good and evil.

The movie The Mask of Zorro reminds me alot of the play Antigone. In The Mask of Zorro one man, Zorro, steps up against his corupt governement and is captured. He is put in jail and his wife is killed. His daughter is taken by his enemy Don Rafael Montero. Zorro escapes and trains a new Zorro who takes back control of the government and frees his people.

A movie such as Gladiator is not that far from the story Antigone. They are kind of durning the same time period and the situation with the kings how they both looks as them self as the high and mighty power.

I think Antigone reminds me of all the reality shows like flavor of love and i love new york because everyone is treating their life like a game. Through this game the characters are trying to find love in thier life but at the same time who can they trust.

In my opinion I think a show like Survivor or any reality show is similar to Antigone. I think this because the "cast" of these shows are always backstabbing, making alliances and being selfish in the essence of achieving a cash sum.

I think that the show Everybody likes Raymond, is similar to Antigone. This is because of the family drama that goes on. Also, the selfishness that ray shows, by putting himself in front of everyone. Also, his brother Robert in the show, who happens to be extremely jealous of his younger brother Ray, just like Antigone and her sister.

I think that story of "Antigone" reminds me of Tyler Perry’s movies. His movies usually consist of family based themes. The two films that I am most familiar with is "A Family That Preys" and "Madea: Family Reunion". The first film that I see resembles "Antigone" shows a family that becomes separated. In "Antigone", the family becomes separated too. The only difference is that Tyler Perry’s film isn’t as tragic as "Antigone" when everybody dies in the end.

I feel as if the story of Antigone is somewhat similar to the story line of the movie "Gladiator." In this story a man looses everything when his wife and son were murdered. After being a high ranking general for the Roman Empire, he became a slave and fought his way to revenge his family. He and Antigone did what they felt was right and took a chance and lost in the scene that they both died. Yet, won by proving their point and proving that what they believed was the right way.

I agree with Mikel and anyone else who said that they felt that the movie "Gladiator" related to the story Antigone. One main reason why I feel this way is that the time periods are both very similar to eachother. Another main reason is that the King in "Gladiator" really does feel like he is a God and that he is above every one else. All that Antigone and Maximus(the main character in "Gladiator") want is for the King to die!

The play Antigone reminds me of Austin Powers. Doctor Evil is always trying to take over and destroy the World. Austin Powers is always trying to stop him and win the respect of his father. Scott is trying to earn the respect of his father Doctor Evil, who likes Mini Me better. And in the end they all find out that they are one, big dysfunctional family.

My example is not so much a show or movie, but a song written by Jim Morrison when he was in the Doors. Since Morrison was what I would call a poet, I'm pretty sure he had a pretty good knowledge of literature. In the song 'The End,' there is a improvisational part in the middle where Jim would basically make up stuff (mostly poetic, or mini stories, and such) well the rest of the song was written one night on stage after Jim was under the influence of psychedelic substances, and he basically recalled the Oedipus story, and made up his own story about how a killer (the son) went and killed his father and then expressed to his mother how he wanted sleep with her (except he used the curse word for that to express it), needless to say, they were thrown out of the Whiskey A Go Go in LA, never to play there again because of what Morrison had said on stage. This relates the story of Antigone, because what Oedipus had done is why Antigone's family is looked down upon, and "cursed."

Antigone reminds me of the show The Gauntlet. The gauntlet is almost like survivor, and like terry said, it’s a game of strategy and backstabbing. The players make alliances with each other and then they go ahead and stab each other in the back so they can win the money for themselves.

A modern day show that i feel will have the sam antics would diffenetly be "House" . House know so much about the human body and the things that go wrong with it. he sometimes finds the cure from the little antic that he has. He most of the time is reight but if not he fixes what was wrong. the only problem is that he always thinks his right. just like Antigone who always wanted to make things right.

Now I believe that the movie Dark Knight is one. Look at the good guy gone bad Harvey Dent. Harvey was a good man before the accident. Creon just took things too far. Both changed in their ways. Harvey also was in love with Rachel Dawes and planned to marry similar to Haeman and Antigone.

A similar movie that relates to this story is Troy. It is around the same time frame, It shows the kings that think they rule everything, and it shows the different family members being killed for fighting for what they believe in.

like makel said, gladiators is a good example, but i thin a better one is from the movie 300. the king of Greece is willing to do anything to make sure people think he is a strong ruler. he will kill his own men just to let the others know how powerful he is.

A modern version that relates to the play Antigone would be a short mini TV series called “The Black Donnelly’s.” This TV show was about an Irish family that was part of the mafia. Family members were missing, killed, having to gamble, and steal money. Towards the end of the show, the family had to move and have to leave all the sad memories behind and begin a new journey. In Antigone, they would kill family members and forget about their bodies after wards. They also would care for their rank in honor or job more than family love and loyalty. This is what Creon displayed in the play Antigone.

I think that the Antigone story is pretty much the same as every material that comes on the "Lifetime" channel. That channel, just like Antigone, is filled with pure drama and over-the-top twists.
