Anybody can study the history of the world or the history of any country and learn all the dates, facts, wars, etc. but never really understand the culture or feeling of the country or of the different people and places in the world. Studying literature may not teach a person about the dates of certain historical events but it can help one appreciate the different cultures and lifestyles of the world and the different people in it. I would like to leave this class with a new outlook and appreciation for the different types of people, societies and cultures that we study, and be able to have a overview of the way the other parts of the world write.

The idea of studying world literature is to grasp the understanding of our cultures or other types of cultures. As people we can gain the knowledge of how certain people live, or express there selves in a matter. The problems that exist in world literature is that people may dictate negatives things about different cultures without fully knowing and understanding how different types of people live.

I think you meant to say in the studying of World Lit. but aside from that, i feel that a greater knowledge of grammar and cultural literature can be gained by participating in this course. i cannot foresee any problems in the studying of world literature other than maybe reading a few semi-interesting books, and i may even be wrong about that.

Jake you are right about studying world literature. It helps us understand about their history and their stories that hasve been passed down from generation. To get the full expereons of a countries history is to go and travel and see what the country has to offer.

The point in studying World Literature is to learn all the types of writing and expnad your knowlegde on writing. American english will always be important to you but knowing other types of english and knowing whats its about and where its from could be important. I jus want to know more about english and learn how to speak more educated than before. Problems with world literature right now is people writing about it that dont really understand it well enough. If you dont know it than dont write about it.

The point of studying World Literature is to familiarize ourselves with what has happened and is currently happening in the World around us. Many people have never left the country they were born in and the only way to learn about other cultures is through reading about them. I hope to learn about cultures throughout the World and study the different styles of writing each culture uses. The only downside of studying World Literature is that you are only able to familiarize yourself with a few people from each culture, and in doing that you are not experiencing the full essence of that culture.

I believe that the point in studying World Literature is to learn about the different ways that the world learns by. I hope to gain a better understanding of the different types of writings and how other cultures learn. I hope that its not to hard to comprehend.

I think the point of studying World Literature is so that we can widen our views of the world and not just stick to the writings of people in the United States. Also, some of the things that we read in World Literature could be very interesting or intriguing to us and would make us want to learn more about the writing style or the country where the writing came from.

Studying World Literature allows us to gain knowledge about other people and their ways of life. By learning about life in other nations, we can find similarities and differences between our experiences and the experiences of others. In the long run, I think we will discover that people from different nations are more similar than we imagine.

Reading world literature also allows us to see the story from another country's perspective. American's are sometimes naive in the belief that we are the best and that we are superior to other nations. In my opinion, we are far less than other nations. We are privileged to be able to eat everyday, not have the military knocking our doors down, etc.... By reading literature from other country's, maybe we can realize how fortunate we really are and not take our privileges for granted.

I believe that we study World Literature to gain knowledge of different cultures and their types of writing. We would also be able to learn how they do poems like we do in America and we would read writing from famous authors that people in America have never heard of. I hope that I will read new types of writing that started in different parts of the world. I believe people do not take in everything from what they learned and they just blow it off. We need to actually take in what we learned and use it in our own writing.

I think that the purpose of studying World Lit is to familiarize ourselves with other countries culture, background, and origin. By studying World Lit we learn more about other countries in the world around us. It helps us better connect with different people and places. I hope to gain the understanding and knowledge of different countries through their writing. I hope to see the difference in writing styles between multiple countries, and get a feel for their daily lives through their works. The only downside of World Literature is that we do not get a complete understanding of the countries culture because some of these stories are fictional, or the stories do always apply to everyone’s daily life.

I believe the purpose of studying World Literature is broaden our view of the world and its literature. We are so ignorant at this day and age of people and their beliefs. But by studying literature from different cultures we can hope to understand them better. So I hope to personally read and better understand some of the stories that we will be reading from other countries. Hopefully they will be interesting rather then dull like some of the stories I have read in the past.

The reason we study the literature of the world is to see how cultures and time have affected how people write. Seeing the differences in the style of writing gives us an insight on how the times were back then. Studying world literature allows us to broaden our horizons on understanding what people of other cultures do. (ie the Islamic extremists).

I think we study literature to teach us new cultures. We all can not take a trip around the world. So the next best thing is to read about it. I think one thing that holds us back is prejudice. If someone doesn't know much about a different culture they are already turned off to the idea of learning about it. I would like to learn how to love literature from this class

I think that when you study World Lit that you can gain a vast amount of information about other cultures and when you do that then you can learn a lot about yourself. What i mean by this is that you can learn so much from the culture that you come from and you can learn how to be more open and appreciative of other cultures and back rounds. We learn that everyone may have different customs and live differently, but we are all the same and that we should all be respected.

I think that the point of studying World Literature is to see how other people in the world look at things. It is also a way to see how other people express themselve in their writing style and what they argue for. I think that one problem is the translation factor. This is a problem because if you be too literal in the translation, then it loses its style. For a poem it will probably lose its rhyme scheme and flow.

I think the point of studying World Literature is so that we can learn about different stories and different types of writings that happened in different places. Also to see the style of writings of different countries rather then just read our own. We can see the style they used to write and talked and see how its different then in todays language.

I think the most important reason for study literature from across the world is to get a glimpse of different cultures throught people's rightings. It lets you see more of people's everyday lives, whereas studying different culture in History class gives you a more economic viewpoint.
The biggest obstacle in reading such vast liturature is understanding the lingo or the people's way of life in order to understand the story itself.

The point of study World Literature is to learn about literature all over the world. I won’t learn just learn about American Literature. I will learn about European (not British) and African Literature as well as many others. I think that people can become more diverse in studying World Literature. I hope to become more diverse. I can learn about regions I’ve never heard of and other interesting cultures. The problems I see that exist in studying World Literature is that we may not understand some of the languages and things that are meant by other cultures.

In my opinion, the point of studying world literature is to be able to learn about different cultures around the world, and expose you to it. What I hope to gain from it is a better understanding of other cultures. The problems I see in studying world lit. is that some people might not agree with certain things said in a book, so that get angry about it and start an argument over it. And also the clashing of cultures, which is pretty much what I said in the last sentence.

I think that studying world literature is important because it gives us the chance to see the perspective of other countries around the world. It helps us to see outside of the U.S. I hope to get better at reading and also learn about different cultures.

We study World Literature in order to widen our knowledge on different cultures types of literature. Personally, I would like to learn more about other countries literature in order to grasp a full understanding on lifestyles of people who reside from outside of the United States.

This class ideally will help me broaden my education with knowledge of culture, literature and things that is happening around us. I think this will help me open up to different aspects of literature and different writing styles. The only problem that already happened was issue with the writing style of Inferno, and Antigone. That style, to me is the most difficult to read.

RyanSmith said...

The class has and will contniue to broaden my english horizons. World Literature can help give you knowledge of how things went down in the past to kind of realize how we now have so many different writing styles.

Dirty Pete said...

World literature broadens our cultural horizon. Without world literature we would only be reading things from people who live in the same places we do. Our own national literature only dates back a couple hundred years ago (when the country was founded). The point of reading is to take you on a journey outside of your everyday life. Reading a book written in Spain can make you feel like you’re actually in Spain and experiencing life there. I hope to gain a more wide variety in the books I have read when I am done taking world literature classes.

Studying World Literature helps us to see to perspective of others along with their writing style. In most cases an areas writing style is formed because of events and customs that surrounded them in that place at a certain time. Personally I hope to learn to think on a deeper level and learn to read the underlying messages that are contained within both modern and ancient writing. Studying World Literature can be difficult because there are many languages and translations are not always exact, therefore the meaning of certain pieces may be distorted by these alternate translation and changing the point of some of the stories.

In my opinion, studying world literature is very important for our overall education. It helps us to find, review, and experiment with other styles and subjects of writing. If all people were to only study their own literature we would start to branch off into our own secluded forms of writing. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can result in further barriers between cultures.
