What did the segment of the film What Dreams May Come concerning Hell take from Dante? What similarities did you see?

I think the segment took the part about those that are being punished for their wrath. The people in the river clawing at the boat reminded me of the Fifth Circle of Hell. Other things that I found similar were the demons and monasters that guarded Hell, the river, and the people that were buried up to their heads in the dirt.

In the part we saw in the movie I believe it was very close to dante's inferno. They travel in the boat and have the people in the water trying to get in. They are entering and there are demon angles flying around. These are two of the things that really jump out at you and make you see similarities. One difference would be the ending where they all live happilly ever after in heaven we have not seen that yet.

The segment of the film that we viewed in class took contropasso from Dante. I see the similarities of the people who committed violent crimes having violent punishments. The sins that his wife committed in the movie were punished in a more mental capacity. At the same time this movie helped to paint a better picture of hell in my mind, bringing the verbiage of the Inferno to life.

The movie showed similarities to the novel of course by Robbin Williams obvious journey through hell and through a few different levels of hell as well.

The film "What Dreams May Come" concerning Hell took from Dante is the story plot of how he got to Hell and why he was their. The similarities I see are Dante doing the same thing such as going to Hell to save his wife, and being guided by his favorite poet.

I believe that the film "What Dreams May Come"is really closely related to the book "Inferno" because in both the book and film they cross a river and as they are crossing it the boat gets ripped to shreds from the people who are in that level of hell.

The movie had many parts that I can relate to the movie. The movie showed people flying around while they are going down the river. There were treacherous seas that Virgil and the others had to cross. People were buried, and their heads were only showing. It showed chaos and violence like the book mentioned.

This movie is very similar to the book. I think the segment that was taken from the movie by the book was all those people in the river. This was just like the book because the bodies were trying to grab Virgil and Dante. Just like Dante had a guard Robin Williams had a guard. I found many similarities and differences between the movie and the book.

In my opinion I think that the bigges similitary to what dante is experiencing in hell is the river of bodies. This is presented to us both in the movie and dantes inferno. The movie also featured monsters such as those seen in the movie and relating to the ones from dantes inferno.

The segment that the movie took from Dante was when the people in the water was all fighting each other can trying to bring the other men on the boat into the water. The other things similar was the demons that were guarding the water and the people that commmitted the bad crimes. You can also say that the movie is trying to be like Dante because Dante was sent to hell for the same reason as the man in the movie. Both of them was sent to get there wife or by there wife so their wifes both have to do with them going to hell.

Obviously What Dreams May Come is similar to The Inferno because both had more original ideas of what hell is, and not just the stereotypical "burning in hell." They were also similar in the fact that Dante and Virgil, as well as Robin Williams and his son had to cross a river and pass through different layers of hell to get to their destination.

After seeing the movie and reading the entire book the Inferno, I saw that some things in the two different hells that were similar. One thing I saw similar was when there was a lot of soul swimming in hell and attacking the boat in the movie, and in the Inferno there were many lost souls swimming are in different kinds of seas. Also another thing that I saw that was similar was the in both hells people lost their identities. Sincerely Vance Peck

The segment that seemed like Dantes story was how he was guided by someone who he looked up to and since he didn't know how to get to his wife he had to be guided. Also the part where Robin Williams fell through the ground where the heads were sticking out ground. Just as Dante shifted the ground and rocks when he walked. But what was different was that Dante shifted the rocked because he was alive and still had human characteristic. But Robin Williams fell through and he was dead, it made him seem like he had weight. Those two parts were different.

The major thing that I picked from this was seeing the people that comitted suicide's. Thier heads were above the dirt such as Dante had potrayed in the book. Also the man that was the captain of the boat to get across the river.

I think the movie are kind of similar because both of the main character are goin throught the same thing. They are guided through hell and they can see what are the punishments of the ones who go to hell. Their was one scene in the movie where the man had to walk over top of people heads and i think that was similar to the cirlce where the people where swimming in the river together in a bunch.

Jake Hulsey said...

I really agree with the films view of how suicide should be punished, and I was glad to see that it was also possible to rescue somebody from that. In inferno the punishment for suicide seemed random and not applicable. In the movie hell was similar in how Robin Williams would drowned in the waters. I agree with Mike that the river full of people resembles the river Styx, with the punishment of wrath. But I also feel that the movie had a different sense of hell than Inferno. There are both similarities and differences but the movie was very interesting and also intriguing as it was coincided with reading the Inferno.

The Hell in What Dreams Mat Come, was very similar to Dante's inferno adventure. The river that Dante traveled on seemed very close to the one Robin Williams was on. Those two were in Hell for to distinct reasons too. One was to save his wife, and the other was to find his favorite poet.

I think that the certain segment showed to us in the movie was similar to the book in some ways. The first similarity is that the movie took the theme of there being an underground Hell. Then they both have a river that Dante and Virgil were traveling through. There are people in the river who are trying to capsize the boat just like in the book. Some monsters that were in the book appeared in the movie like the demon angels, which were the black spirits in the book.

There were a few similarities between the Hell in The Inferno and the Hell in What Dreams May Become. Aside from the similarities that were present in both versions of Hell, I noticed that each Dante and Robin Williams character were being guided through Hell by people that had inspired them in there life to go into the professions they went in to.

The film "What Dreams May Come" took many punishments from Dante's Inferno. The punishment for suicide was especially similar to Dante's punishment.

The sement of the film that we watched in class really does relate to the Hell that Dante creates. I feel this way because it shows how you loose your loved ones in hell and how you should cherish every moment you have with them, and not take them or the moments for granted.

The movie showed similarities by showing a person from the movie being put in there circle by there sin. For example, robin williams wife was put in a circle by herself because it was violence against self.

Brian Petroski said...

As they first enter hell is a good exmaple of wrath. The people were mad that they were comming in and the people in the water started to climb all over the boat making them fall in the water. The people were mad and they were trying the make Robin Williams and the other guy mad to by making them fall off the boat

In the movie we watched in class they took the idea from Dante that there are many different levels of hell and not just one big one. It was a very close to a couple of Dante’s circles with the people being stuck in a river / field. They were stuck there with just their heads out. Yet, with his wife’s punishment she was left alone in what seemed to be there house but was in shambles. I didn’t care much for the whole 'love can save' theme but it worked in the movie but not in Dante’s world.

Julian Jimenez said...

The segment of the film takes the idea that there will be a guide that takes them through hell. A similarity that I see is that they go through levels of hell. The levels have punishments for the people, like how the people were buried in the ground. They also have transportations to the different levels and entering hell.

The Similarities I see between What Dreams May Come and The Inferno are that they both are a man’s journey through Hell in search of something. Robin Williams is searching for his wife, and Dante is searching to find out how he can be a better person. They both ride in boats to get to Hell and they both have guides. There was also a city in What Dreams May Come which reminded me of what the City of Dis would have looked like.

Cody Steward said...

The main similarity I saw to what dreams may come and the Inferno was the River. Also the souls in the river who were there to suffer, and end up pulling everyone out of the boat. The other similarity, is the idea of people having their own version of hell. Dante has his, and the wife has hers. The last similarity is that you wouldn't know people that you knew on earth, and people could change their appearances.

In the movie What Dreams May come, the most obvious thing that the directors took from the Inferno was when the people in the ocean take over the boat, capsize it and throw the occupants into the ocean with them. This mimics the circle of wrath.

the segment of the film What Dreams May Come concerning Hell taken from Dante was the traveling on a boat to go the destination. The people in the water reminded me of the people in the sea of boiling blood. THe similarities I saw that when Robin Williams' character went down to hell with his mentor disguised as his son showed Dante and Virgil. Virgil was Dante idol/mentor.

At first i didnt even know what movie we were watching when i walked in the room. Then when they were on the boat and the people in the blood filled river trying to get the guy or should i say dante. i thought it was dante's inferno but it. was not. And the how the lady for the punishment she was in the ground with just her head sticking up for killing herself.

The movie showed that there is one path way to hell and that was the river in the movie. this movie show how people suffer or even get torchered in hell. I think this was is just like the book because this shows a man who had to make it all the way through hell just to save his family.

The similarities that I saw were Robin Williams going through Hell, which looked like some of the different stages in the book. Like the people that were in the river for example.

In addition, the character that Robin Williams was with who was steering the boat rather seemed like Virgil, the character in the novel and how he would help Dante get around hell.

The movies first seen when they entered hell was taken from Dante. When all the people were swimming in the river and fliped over the boat, and tryed to get in, all this was from Dante.

Some similarities that i saw was the part were the people were in the river trying to climb on the boat. It reminded me about the people who tried to fight in the fifth circle that were fighting eachother. They were trying to get out of hell and they knew that the boat was leaving hell. It was a slim similarity but they still match.

In the movie segment "What Dreams May Come" they took some things written in Dante's Inferno. One thing is the dead souls in the river grabbing at you trying to pull you under.

Dirty Pete said...

When watching the movie the most obvious part that was similar to Dante's Inferno was when Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr. and that other guy were in the boat and the damned souls were swiming around and frantically trying to get at them. Another similarity, which was a little more sutle, was the fear that was in the men that entered Hell. Like Dante, those men were afraid. I guess they're afraid of geting stuck in Hell.

In the film a fair bit of the geography was taken from The Inferno. I thought a very significant similarity was the contrapass or fitting punishment. Suicide victims were condemned to an eternity of self pity and hatred. Tearing into themselves with their own mind.
